By dialing one of the many numbers provided to reach a specific extension you are unknowingly participating in a communication process called DID redirection.

What is Direct Inward Dialing?

Direct inward dialing, also known as DID, is a one-way incoming trunking mechanism that lets someone placing a call to directly reach a specific extension without having to go through an attendant. For those who don’t know trunking is a method that provides network access to many different people by sharing a set of lines instead of providing each line individually. This cut downs on the amount of maintenance that goes into taking care of the communication system as well as reduces any extra expenses associated with multiple lines.


By using a DID redirector a company can provide a way for its customers to connect directly to each of its employees without having to pay for an individual line for each extension. With DID a business can own 20 trunk lines while having as many extensions as they like but only 20 phone calls can be in place at the same time. Anyone calling while all 20 lines are in use will either be sent a busy signal, be redirected to a voice mail system, or placed on automatic hold depending on the option you choose.

How Does DID Redirection Work?

Whenever an external caller calls in and types the extension they are trying to reach the last few digits dialed are used to determine the intended party and the call is then forwarded on a special DID line. For example if a company has 10 DID trunks and owns all the phone numbers from 555-0000 to 555-1234 whenever a caller dials any number in this range, the call is forwarded on any available trunk without operator assistance.

The same way a DID redirector works for the PSTN, public switched telephone network, is the same way it works for all VoIP communications. If a PSTN user tries to reach a VoIP user using a DID number a gateway is used to connect the PSTN to the VoIP network
